Iowa issues screwworm alert after cases found in Texas, New Mexico

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa officials are asking livestock producers and pet owners to watch their animals closely for open wounds after cases of a parasitic fly were found in Texas and New Mexico.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship issued guidance after multiple cases of New World Screwworm were detected in livestock in Texas. One case was also confirmed in a dog in New Mexico.

Animal caretakers and pet owners should routinely check their animals for open wounds, according to the department. If maggots are found in an open wound on a warm-blooded animal, people should report it to the department immediately at 515-281-5305 or [email protected]
