Opera chief quits with a blast at the US system

Victor DeRenzi was the formative artistic director and principal conductor of Sarasota Opera in Florida since 1982. He resigned three months ago. Now he has gone public, blaming the board of his own opera house and of the governance of American arts in general.

In the last few years, I had begun to realize that I could not develop an artistic future for the opera with the current board.

Budgets were approved late, sometimes less than six months before the new fiscal year began.
