Kent County is hiring 6 new prosecutors to tackle a backlog that’s risen to nearly 3,000 cases

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Kent County Prosecutor’s Office is planning to hire six new assistant prosecuting attorneys to tackle a growing backlog of cases.

The new hires will be funded by a $4.8 million grant from the state of Michigan’s Local Prosecutor Support Grant Program, which provides funding to county prosecutors with the highest crime count to help reduce the average caseload per attorney.

Assistant prosecuting attorneys in Kent County handle an average of 344 cases per year. Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker said adding six new assistant prosecutors is expected to help reduce the average caseload by 17%…
