She lived in Rockingham County, North Carolina, and was allegedly headed to Martinsville, Virginia, to do some Christmas shopping. But Smith seemed to vanish into thin air. Then, amazingly, she resurfaced “at an undisclosed location in North Carolina,” per the outlet. On February 20, 2026, authorities stated that Michele Hundley Smith, now 62, was still alive and she was doing fine. However, a bizarre twist in her saga was yet to come.

Smith Was Arrested Soon After Her Reappearance
Smith was supposed to be in court on December 27, 2001. She had been charged with DWI the previous month. Just days after she was found this year, Smith was arrested due to a failure-to-appear warrant connected with that years-old case. Luck was with her, though. A judge decided to throw out the charge on Monday, June 8. Per The Charlotte Observer, “The prosecutor cited the lack of an original police file and the retirement of the arresting officer.”
