Poloncarz Signs Landmark Biometric Privacy Law Following Concerns Over Customer Surveillance Practices at Wegmans

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz has signed a first-of-its-kind biometric privacy law that prohibits businesses from collecting, retaining or selling customers’ biometric information, making Erie County the first county in New York State to enact such protections.

The new law, known as the Biometric Transparency and Privacy Act (BTPA), comes amid growing concerns about how corporations gather and use personal information, particularly after public attention focused on the extensive customer data collection practices outlined in Wegmans’ privacy policy.
