Feeding the body and soul: Food ministry provides groceries for 400 people monthly

From the front door of her home just down the hill from the church, E’dee Grun watches the line of cars form. On food distribution days, the first car usually arrives around 3:30-4 in the morning. By the time the doors to Feeding Families of Alabama opens at 9 a.m., more than 100 cars are lined up.

“We don’t ask anyone for paperwork to show they need help,” Grun, the founder of the Hartselle-based nonprofit organization, said. “If they sit outside the church for hours in the heat and the cold, these people need some food. If they are hungry, we are going to feed them.”

Grun, who will turn 65 in July, knows firsthand the feeling of hunger. And she knows firsthand the feeling of being denied access to food…
