Storm threat fades into a fantastic Friday, more storms to follow

Hot and humid weather going out with a small bang in the area as a cold front triggers scattered thunderstorms. The front will move through overnight with a fresh feel to Friday’s weather.

For tonight, the cold front will slowly push southeast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to bubble up along the cold front, clearing out of the area by sunrise. An isolated severe storm or two remains possible with a threat of hail up to quarter-size, or wind gusts up to 60 mph, along with frequent lightning. The storms will also produce pockets of heavy rain. A few spots could see over an inch of rain, but many areas won’t see any rain at all with storms remaining scattered along the front.

Drier air working in behind the cold front will make for a nice finish to the week. Skies will be bright, and it will be noticeably less humid and less hot.

Tonight’s cold front will return north Friday night, triggering scattered thunderstorms by Saturday morning. This will be the beginning of a stormy stretch of weather into Saturday night. There could be some severe weather, but this may come down to whether there are breaks in the wet weather during the day or not. Heavy rainfall is likely, with 1 to 3″ rainfall amounts possible. Isolated heavier amounts can’t be ruled out. The atmosphere will be primed to produce heavy rainfall. The recent heavy rainfall is also setting the stage for an increased chance of some flooding.

Drier weather returns Sunday as a cold front ushers in a mild June air mass. Highs in the 70s, low humidity, and some sun will make for fantastic outdoor weather, especially for summer.
