As a teenager, chef James Sanchez would spend his spring breaks in Port Aransas, selling food from an ice chest on the beach and saving up money to fund his meals at Whataburger “morning, noon and night.”
Now, at 55, the South Side San Antonio native is the brain behind culinary innovations for the iconic Texas brand’s 1,100 restaurants. As Whataburger’s corporate executive chef, Sanchez dreams up the meals that would make his teenage self proud, items like the Bacon Steakhouse Double and the Buffalo Ranch Chicken Strip Sandwich.
“Even when I applied for the job, I never imagined the depth of what we do here, the length we go to to curate and crack the code of the products on the menu,” he said…
