Stark County dog trainer avoids jail for pet’s nail-trimming death

CANTON − A veteran Stark County dog trainer convicted of animal cruelty for the death of a golden retriever in his care will spend two years on probation.

Jerry Barnes, 71, of Marlboro Township, was sentenced last week by Stark County Common Pleas Judge Kristin Farmer. Barnes, who’d operated The Well Heeled Way dog training, had stood trial on April 22.
