ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — The Allen County Sheriff’s Department is making an effort to highlight its policies and transparency efforts with its use of Flock Safety cameras, while local officials are questioning the new technology’s presence in their communities.
The Sheriff’s Department currently operates 10 Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras throughout Allen County and says that the cameras are used to help locate stolen vehicles, identify suspect vehicles, and assist in finding missing or endangered persons.
The discussion follows months of public scrutiny surrounding the Fort Wayne Police Department’s use of Flock cameras. Fort Wayne officials have credited the technology with what the Sheriff’s Office has also set out to accomplish, while critics have raised concerns about privacy, data collection, and government surveillance.
