Ribbon cutting marks first of its kind permanent housing for survivors

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A new housing development in Kalamazoo is creating what community leaders say has long been missing for survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, a permanent place to heal, rebuild and move forward.

Leaders gathered Friday to celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting of Kalamazoo Community Courtyard. It’s a new 19-unit housing development located on Duke Street in Kalamazoo. The development includes 18 permanent supportive housing units specifically designated for survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence and human trafficking, along with one caretaker unit.

Organizers say the project marks the first development of its kind in Kalamazoo County.
