Long-missing mussels returned to South Anna River

A person holds a natural freshwater mussel and a farmed mussel for comparison on Thursday, June 4, 2026 at the Patrick Henry Boat Launch in Doswell, Virginia.

In early June, dozens of volunteers tucked alewife floater mussels into the stream bed, where they will filter contaminants out of gallons of water daily, serve as a food source for fish and aquatic mammals and reproduce with the help of river herring. The species had been missing from the region for roughly 200 years due to the Ashland Mill Dam, which was dismantled in 2024.
