Easton played a special role in nation’s birth, so it’s going big for the 250th. What’s planned.

Downtown Easton will serve as the backdrop for a four-day commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary from July 8-11, marking the exact anniversary of the city’s historic public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

The Northampton County Historical & Genealogical Society says in a news release it will host the series of programs, performances and exhibitions celebrating Easton’s role in American history. The celebration begins July 8, exactly 250 years after the Declaration of Independence was publicly read in Easton on July 8, 1776.

The events kick off at 11:45 a.m. July 8 at Sigal Museum with “Raise a Glass to Freedom: 250 Years Later,” featuring a new video presentation of the Declaration reading, champagne toast and curator-led tour of the “Read This: The History of Media in Northampton County” exhibition. That evening, the Easton Declaration Dinner takes place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Thyme Rooftop Grille, including a reception with local wines, dinner and ceremonial reading of the Declaration.
