Live blog: IRONMAN race day temps expected to top out at 71 degrees

After completing the 1.2-mile swim in the Rock River, athletes entered Transition 1 in downtown Rockford, where they exchanged swim gear for cycling equipment. This transition area serves as an important checkpoint, requiring competitors to quickly put on helmets and shoes and mount their bikes before heading onto the course.

The bulk of the athletes are now on the 56-mile bike course. Riders left downtown Rockford and headed north to downtown Rockton. Nutrition and hydration will become important as athletes work to balance pace with the physical demands that still await them on the run.

The bike segment represents the largest portion of today’s IRONMAN 70.3 Rockford and will play a major role in the overall standings before athletes return downtown for the final transition and run.
