Readers respond: Consult with community on renamed streets

I have no problem with renaming a street, and certainly no problem with naming it after an Hispanic person who accomplished great things, (“Portland leaders launch fast-track renaming of César E. Chávez Boulevard,” May 26). My problem is that the community was forced into accepting this change without a vote. The city’s renamed streets get renamed without most of the community being involved.

Now we find ourselves in an uncomfortable situation. Forget about whose feelings are going to be hurt and think about those of us who just want the street name to go back to Northeast 39th Avenue.

The city can add ceremonial signs, if it wants, to honor certain groups or individuals. This way, addresses wouldn’t have to be changed and if something like this happens again, the city could just remove the ceremonial sign…
