Charges upgraded against ex-Gonzales mayoral candidate after victim dies

HAMMOND, La. (WAFB) – Hammond Police have upgraded the charge against a Gonzales woman accused in a shooting that left a Baton Rouge man dead.

Police said Kemlyn Lomas, 58, of Gonzales, is now charged as an accessory to second-degree murder. Authorities said she was rearrested on the higher charge Saturday, June 13. She is being held without bond pending a bond hearing, which is expected to be held sometime today, officials said.

Police said officers responded May 27 to a reported shooting on Perry Lane in Hammond and found Kendrick Nixon Sr., 60, of Baton Rouge, with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to North Oaks Medical Center and was listed in stable but critical condition. Police said Nixon died June 10.

Following the shooting, police said Lomas turned herself in at the Hammond Police Department and told investigators she confronted Nixon at a Perry Lane residence because she believed he was there with another woman. Police said she reported a physical altercation followed and she used a Taser on him.
