Brenda Zlamany has never been one to follow convention. So when she gave birth to a daughter in 2000, the Brooklyn artist chose an unusual approach to naming her newborn.
Rather than settling on a name before delivery, Zlamany brought about 100 possibilities with her to the hospital, each written on an index card. For the next several days, she sat beside her newborn’s bassinet and read them aloud one by one. The baby couldn’t speak, of course. But Zlamany believed she could react.
