Witnesses step in after woman jumps from van during alleged violent kidnapping in Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — After a month-long ordeal of physical and emotional abuse, a woman was able to escape her alleged abuser, Joshua Montalvo, 37, with the help of a 22-year veteran corrections officer, leading to Montalvo’s arrest and charges of attempted murder, aggravated kidnapping, and other offenses, court documents reveal.

According to Winnebago County court records, on May 19, Rockford Police officers met with a woman who claimed to have been beaten and strangled by Montalvo at her home. Charges of unlawful restraint, domestic battery, and strangulation were filed against him at that time.

Nearly a month later, on June 12, Montalvo returned to punch and strangle the woman until she went unconscious. He then reportedly duct-taped her wrists together and forced her into the back of a black van.
