Photographer captures moment low-water crossing stalls stolen car getaway at Leon Creek

A flooded low-water crossing brought an apparent getaway attempt to an abrupt end Monday morning after a man allegedly stole a vehicle from a West Side dealership, according to San Antonio police.

A San Antonio Express-News photographer witnessed the incident while recording footage of rising water at the low-water crossing on West Commerce Street at Leon Creek. The creek is known to flood during heavy rain, and more than 2 inches had fallen in the area before the incident.

That’s when a Chevrolet Malibu entered the high water.

After the car stalled in the floodwaters, the driver — an unidentified man — climbed out and carefully made his way along the wooden barriers while calling for help.

The photographer called 911, but the man was able to reach the roadway and leave in another vehicle before officers arrived…
