Brush fire at Camp Pendleton grows to 650 acres

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A brush fire that started in Camp Pendleton Monday afternoon quickly spread to over 650 acres, causing heavy smoke in the area.

The United States Marine Corps base posted on its official social media account around 3:56 p.m. that the Camp Pendleton Fire Department, Orange County Fire Authority and Cleveland National Forest were responding to a fire at the Quebec training area.

It said that there was heavy smoke in the area, but no threat to personnel or infrastructure at the time.

At 5:17 p.m., Cal Fire reported that the fire, named the Mateo Fire, was 466 acres. At about 7:10 p.m. the fire had grown to 650 acres and was 5% contained…
