Working but still struggling: New report finds one in three east central Iowa households can’t afford basic needs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A new report from United Way of East Central Iowa shows that thousands of households across the region are working but still struggling to afford basic necessities.

The latest ALICE report found that one in three households in East Central Iowa falls below the ALICE Survival Threshold, a measure that includes both households living in poverty and those considered part of the working poor.

ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained and Employed. The designation applies to households that earn too much to qualify for many forms of assistance but not enough to consistently cover essential expenses…
