LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – After a stretch of beautiful June weather, conditions are about to shift.
Much of Tuesday has come in the form of mostly sunny skies and comfortable weather. Conditions will remain dry, with no rain expected through much of the work week.
While Tuesday offers one last day of comfort, Wednesday brings gusty winds and heat, followed by a wet weekend that could bring severe weather.
Wednesday: Heat, Wind and Fire Danger
Wednesday’s forecast includes temperatures peaking near 90 degrees in Lincoln, with some areas in southern Nebraska reaching the low to mid-90s — the warmest day of the week for most locations.
But the real concern is the wind.
Wind Advisory in Effect: Gusty southerly winds will increase overnight into Wednesday morning, with gusts potentially reaching 40-50 mph. A Wind Advisory is in place for southeast Nebraska from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., where gusts could peak around 50 mph.
As a cold front pushes through midday, winds will shift to the northwest, but gusts will remain strong — 40-50 mph — through the afternoon and evening. Northeast Nebraska could see the strongest gusts, with another Wind Advisory in effect from noon to 9 p.m.
What This Means for You:
- Secure any loose outdoor items
- Be cautious while driving, especially in high-profile vehicles
- Expect blowing dust and reduced visibility at times
- Windy weather for College World Series fans
Fire Danger: The combination of warm, dry and windy conditions will create very high fire danger across northeast Nebraska. Relative humidity could drop to 20-25% in the afternoon. Avoid any outdoor burning and be extremely cautious with any ignition sources.
Thursday Through Friday: Calmer and Cooler
Wednesday’s wind will gradually diminish Thursday evening. High temperatures will drop back to the mid-70s to low 80s — more seasonable for mid-June. A few spotty showers are possible Thursday morning, but most of the area should stay dry…
