More Nebraska Schools Deemed Likely to Adopt Pre-K-2nd Grade Suspension Policies For Violent Behavior Following Law Change

Nebraska- Several of Nebraska’s largest school districts are reviewing whether to update student discipline policies after a new state law once again allows suspensions for pre-K through 2nd grade students who engage in violent behavior.

Earlier this month, Omaha Public Schools announced it would not expand its suspension policy despite the legislative change. The law reverses a 2023 restriction that limited suspensions of younger students to cases involving weapons being brought to school.

Among the state’s larger districts, Millard and Bellevue Public schools plan to revise their policies to align with state law. Lincoln, Elkhorn, Papillon-La Vista and Grand Island’s school districts are still reviewing the legislation, and no final decisions have been made…
