HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — The pressure is mounting as the High Point Firefighters Association is calling on city leaders to include funding for a special separation allowance.
The funding would support retired firefighters through a stipend to have health care and bridge the gap between when they retire and when they can begin drawing full Social Security benefits at 62 years old.
Fight Intensifies
The fight is intensifying after the Greensboro City Council approved a budget Tuesday night, which includes funding for a special separation allowance for Greensboro firefighters.
“With the police department, they are earning their stipend. They’ve been getting it since the 80s, and as they retire, the bullet stops, but when a firefighter retires, the cancer never stops,” President of the High Point Firefighters Association Robert Templeton said…
