PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – Portlanders are learning more about a proposed rail merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern — a deal the companies say could improve the supply chain and lower shipping costs. But in Portland’s Central Eastside, residents and workers worry the merger could mean even more trains moving through an area already plagued by lengthy rail-related backups.
“Trains come through about every 5 minutes”
Near the railroad crossings at Southeast 8th, 11th and 12th avenues, trains frequently stop traffic and create major congestion. People who spend time in the area say backups can happen throughout the day — and sometimes last more than an hour.
“Everyone who lives in Portland has been late because of the trains,” said Tim Slusarczyk, who works nearby.
