Summit County Council honors APD for student engagement program

Final hearing for Copley ditch petition met with opposition

DOWNTOWN AKRON — Summit County Council June 15 recognized the Akron Police Department (APD) for a program aimed to help elementary school students foster a positive relationship with police officers.

At the regular Council meeting, Councilman Jeff Wilhite (D-District 4) presented a commendation to APD officers in attendance for the department’s 10 Second Challenge community program. The 10 Second Challenge is a pop-up event in which APD officers surprise Akron Public Schools students and their parents with a trip to a local convenience store for a chance to grab treats such as candy, chips or soda, on behalf of the officer, Wilhite said.

“Building relationships with our community is a priority for the Akron Police Department … This has been a very positive and memorable way for young children to hold a lifelong positive memory of the police officers that are there to protect and support them,” Wilhite said, adding that feedback for the program has been “outstanding.”…
