High E. Coli Levels Prompt Swimming Restriction at Presque Isle’s Beach 6

Recent severe storms led to a swimming restriction at Beach 6 on Tuesday after elevated levels of E. coli were detected in the water. As of Wednesday, the restriction was lifted, but water quality levels continue to change.

Officials with the Regional Science Consortium conduct daily water quality testing throughout the summer to determine whether conditions are safe for swimmers. When E. coli levels exceed established safety thresholds, beach advisories or restrictions are issued to protect public health.

“We are looking at water quality all the time during those hundred days of summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day,” said Dr. Jeanette Schnars, executive director of the Regional Science Consortium. “At the restriction level, we do have the red flags out, which means humans are not advised to go in the water. They can still come to the beach, so the beach is not closed.”…
