AI company backtracks on change to data center campus after Birmingham’s new rules

The AI cloud company building a multibillion-dollar data center in Birmingham is revising its plans after the city passed regulations for the industry.

Data center company Nebius Inc. recently asked the city for permission to adjust the design of its second data center building at the campus slated for the Oxmoor Valley neighborhood. But the company says it is pulling back that permit request because of the additional regulatory hurdles under the city’s new zoning regulations that took effect last week.

“We submitted a permit revision for the second building so outside equipment could be stored in a basement space,” said Nebius spokesman John Sutter. “In no way did these proposed design changes affect the project’s building footprint, power, or compute capacity, and, after initial feedback from the city, we decided to withdraw the revision and proceed as previously approved.”…
