At Schoenbrunn, Ohio’s first Christian settlement tells a forgotten Revolutionary War story

NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio – Long before Ohio became a state – and years before the Declaration of Independence – a group of European missionaries and Delaware Indians united to create a village near present-day New Philadelphia.

Here, they merged their two cultures, established Ohio’s first school and first church, and lived a simple, peaceful life.
