Rocky Mount Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension receives recognition award

The Franklin County office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) received an Achievement Award from the Virginia Association of Counties at the June 16 Franklin County Board of Supervisors meeting. The award was presented by Julie Whitcock, general counsel for the Virginia Association of Counties.

Virginia Tech and Virginia State University administer the Virginia Cooperative Extension through regional offices. The Franklin County office at 90 E Court Street provides information to residents on agriculture, pest control, family and consumer services, and 4-H youth programs.

According to Carol Haynes, Unit Coordinator for the office, the Franklin County Local Food Guide Directory produced by VCE is an example of how a community can promote agriculture as a major part of the county’s economy. The guide was established in 2011, and 4,000 copies are printed each year with updated information. It provides information about small businesses and connects consumers directly with local producers. The guide highlights farm-to-table stands, farmers’ markets, various community events featuring local products, and the general availability of locally produced goods.
