“Forever chemicals” found in Fairfax County water

PFAS chemicals have been detected in drinking water that serves Fairfax County residents, prompting officials to move forward with new treatment plans.

According to Fairfax Water, PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are also known as “forever chemicals.” PFAS have come from industrial production and consumer products since the 1940s because of their unique properties that repel water, oil, and stains. These chemicals break down very slowly and can stay in the environment for decades.
