Norton Children’s Heart Institute prepares going-away celebration for young West African patient

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A 1-year milestone is coming with a new outlook for Audrey Koffi, a young heart patient from Togo who is recovering at Norton Children’s Hospital after treatment for a ventricular septal defect (VSD), often called a “hole in the heart.”

Dr. Kelly Frazier, a pediatric hospitalist at Norton Children’s, said she has a personal connection to Audrey’s family after living and working in Togo for a decade. “I lived and worked in Togo, West Africa, for ten years… and I lived and worked at the hospital where Audrey’s dad works… and Audrey’s mom works at our guest house,” Frazier said.

Frazier said Audrey’s heart concerns began before she was born. “When she [her mother, Catherine] was six months pregnant, she was seen by a midwife who suspected that her heart was not working correctly,” Frazier said, adding that after Audrey was born, “they didn’t tell her anything that was wrong.”…
