Located just steps from the water, Erie Canal Amish Treasures has opened its doors, combining a fully stocked deli counter with a gorgeous showroom of handcrafted gifts, textiles, and woodcrafts.
The Backstory: Bringing Tradition to the Victorian Village
The roots of Erie Canal Amish Treasures began more than two decades ago in a tight-knit farming community in western New York. The Borntrager family was widely celebrated among neighbors for two distinct passions: their exceptionally rich, slow-smoked deli meats and their meticulous eye for hand-woven basketry and woodwork. For years, the family operated a seasonal roadside stand, dreaming of a year-round space where they could connect with a broader community.
When looking for a permanent home, the family fell in love with Brockport’s beautifully preserved Victorian architecture and its historic identity as a bustling canal port. They envisioned a warm, multi-functional mercantile where busy college students, local families, and canal travelers could step back in time.
Over several months of careful renovation, the Borntragers transformed a spacious downtown storefront into a stunning hybrid market. The left side of the shop features a gleaming, temperature-controlled deli case packed with regional delicacies, while the right side opens into an inviting showroom lined with rough-hewn pine shelving and the comforting scents of cedar and pure beeswax.
