TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Today is Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day — marking June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Texas learned they were finally free, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Communities across the country are recognizing the day, including here in Tucson.
One local event honoring Juneteenth through art and culture is the third annual Juneteenth Art Expo at The Drawing Studio, featuring works from local African American artists. Organizers say this year’s theme is “Nourishment,” designed to take visitors on a journey through history while highlighting resistance, resilience, reverence and joy.
