Heat continues for New Mexico on Father’s Day

It’s been a hot day for millions of New Mexicans as temperatures reached the triple digits in the metro and southern New Mexico. Albuquerque reached the high 90s this afternoon with abundant sunshine for the first half of Father’s Day weekend. Today’s forecast also brought breezy winds to sections of northern New Mexico with gusts ranging from 20-40 mph. The combination of the heat, low relative humidity values, and the winds prompted the National Weather Service to issue Red Flag Warnings for northwest New Mexico and southwest Colorado. Those will expire at 7 pm, while the alerts in Colorado will expire at 10 this evening.

Overnight, mild to seasonable weather will persist throughout New Mexico before the heat settles in for Father’s Day. Drier air will shift farther east on Sunday allowing for moisture in the eastern half of the state to shift across the Texas state line. The drier air will contribute to warmer temperatures for some locations on Father’s Day. Triple digit heat is forecasted for some communities in southern and eastern New Mexico.
