Sea lion pup rescued near LAX released back into the wild

A malnourished sea lion pup that was rescued from a jetty on Dockweiler State Beach near the Los Angeles International Airport on April 17 was recently released back into the wild, the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro announced Saturday.

“After receiving a call from a lifeguard, expert responder Adam Fox arrived to find that the pup had fallen into a deep rocky hole on the jetty,” the Marine Mammal Care Center said.

Fox reached headfirst into the hole and hoisted the sea lion to safety. Back at the MMCC hospital, the sea lion, which the center named Earl, was fed mashed fish through a tube for several days until he was strong enough to eat a whole fish on his own.

“Though he was treated for a brief bout of lethargy and gastrointestinal issues, Earl became an eager eater and soon doubled in size,” the MMCC said…
