Longtime residents of a 16-unit apartment building west of San Francisco’s Chinatown neighborhood have organized a tenants association to fight several rent increases and pending evictions. The tenants, many of whom are low-income seniors, said during a Monday rally they are being pushed out by a company that bought the building last year.
Tenants in six of the Nob Hill building’s rent-controlled units, including a 92-year-old resident who has lived there for about 40 years, are facing eviction. The residents, as well as advocates with Chinatown Community Development Center and the Asian Law Caucus, said the property owner has cited safety, cleanliness and public nuisance concerns in its eviction notices. But, the residents added, they have never received complaints from neighbors or the building’s previous family owners.
