Student resource group cutting service at Port Orchard middle school

A local student services organization will suspend programming at Marcus Whitman Middle School in Port Orchard for the 2026-27 school year.

Communities In Schools of Peninsula (CISP) on Wednesday, June 17, announced its decision to temporarily cease service at three schools within the South Kitsap and Peninsula school districts next year. In addition to Marcus Whitman, the group will suspend 2026-27 programming at Harbor Heights Elementary School in Gig Harbor, and after-school programming at Purdy Elementary School in Gig Harbor.

“After careful consideration, CISP leadership determined that, at this time, financial resources are not sufficient to sustain services at these three sites for the organization’s next fiscal year,” CISP said in a release. “This decision was not made lightly and reflects broader funding challenges — not the value or effectiveness of the program. … CISP remains committed to serving students across the Peninsula and South Kitsap communities and will continue to pursue funding opportunities to restore services at these schools as resources allow.”…
