SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN — Governor Gretchen Whitmer is challenging the federal government’s decision to deny disaster assistance for Michigan communities devastated by a deadly tornado outbreak that killed four people in March.
Whitmer has appealed a Federal Emergency Management Agency’s denial of Individual Assistance funding for residents in Branch, Cass and St. Joseph counties affected by the March 6 tornado outbreak. FEMA confirmed the denial in a May 31 letter.
“Families are still recovering from the devastation caused by the March tornadoes,” Whitmer said. “These storms damaged critical infrastructure, destroyed homes, and tragically claimed four lives. While I’m disappointed that FEMA denied our request for Individual Assistance, our work is not over. We will keep fighting to deliver the support our residents deserve, and help affected communities recover and rebuild.”…
