BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) — Birmingham officials say jail staff followed established protocols in connection with two recent inmate deaths that remain under investigation, while also outlining a $5 million effort to improve safety and operations at the Birmingham City Jail.
In follow-up statements released Tuesday, Deputy Chief of Public Safety Carlton L. Peeples addressed questions surrounding inmate supervision, suicide prevention procedures and housing policies after two inmates died while in custody earlier this month.
“The recent deaths in the Birmingham City Jail are deeply troubling, and our thoughts and prayers are with their families, loved ones, and everyone impacted by these losses,” Peeples said…
