It’s official: You can now get jail time in Surfside Beach for feeding wildlife

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. — After protests, a federal lawsuit and a visit by HBO, the Surfside Beach town council gave final approval Monday night to a revised animal ordinance that could bring a jail sentence for feeding geese and other wildlife.

The new ordinance says “no person shall intentionally, knowingly, recklessly, or negligently feed wildlife (including squirrels, seagulls, and waterfowl) on public or private property within the town of Surfside Beach, which includes the town’s parks and beaches.

The penalty for violating the ordinance is a fine of up to $500, or community service or incarceration of up to 30 days…
