Concerns raised after Roanoke gunshot detectors installed in wrong locations

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – The City of Roanoke is stopping work on installing some of its 75 gunshot detectors after officials said 16 devices were installed in locations not approved by City Council.

The city said the devices will cover a nearly 2-mile radius. Roanoke officials said the devices detect audio based on events, including gunshots and repeated cries for help.

Flock, the company that helps make the devices, said the detectors are not always recording and only record when triggered. The detectors then activate nearby Flock license-plate-reading cameras to assist with crime-solving efforts…
