Birmingham approves sale of Grand River land for world class karting facility

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Birmingham leaders approved the sale of about 25 acres in the Grand River Technology Park to support a world-class karting facility near Barber Motorsports Park.

The city will sell the undeveloped property to BK Propco, LLC, for $1.85 million under a contract for sale and development of real estate approved by the City Council. The ordinance received first reading and was submitted by the city attorney. It was recommended by the mayor, the Budget and Finance Committee and the Economic Development and Tourism Committee.

Officials said the site was once former mine land that was stabilized about eight years ago with the help of federal reclaimed mine land grants after the city worked with U.S. Steel. The property has remained largely dormant since then…
