The quake was reported at 8:10 a.m. Pacific time about 7 miles north of Redwood Valley, with an estimated depth of about 5 miles, according to preliminary data from the Northern California Seismic System. The report was listed as automatic, meaning the magnitude and location had not yet been confirmed by a human seismologist.

The quake triggered earthquake alerts on phones across parts of Northern California, including the Bay Area. One USGS ShakeAlert message warned that shaking could intensify.
