KU adaptive golf clinic shows golf is for everyone

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A solo sport like golf may not be the first activity that comes to mind for confidence building and community, but KU Wichita Pediatrics is helping people rethink that.

KU Pediatrics held its third annual Adaptive Golf Clinic at First Tee Greater Wichita on Monday. The hands-on clinic was created so children with physical and cognitive challenges — as well as those recovering from cancer — could enjoy the sport in a supportive environment free of the stress and pressure often associated with golf.

“This is just a day where the families get to spend some time with the U.S. PGA pros, and just hit a few balls, hang out, just enjoy each other’s company,” said Dr. Sid Sivamurthy, a pediatrician and KU medical director.

Kids spent the afternoon getting tips from the pros, practicing their putting and playing games in an environment built on positive reinforcement. Meanwhile, grateful parents watched their children forget their worries and experience a sense of belonging in a sport they may have once thought was out of reach…
