VALLEY CENTER, Kan. (KWCH) – The Valley Center City Council held a special meeting on Thursday to discuss options regarding the future of the fire department.
The meeting comes after Sedgwick County announced it was ending automatic and mutual aid agreements with the city. Valley Center is currently on a mutual aid agreement, which is set to expire on Sep. 23.
Valley Center is considering three options.
- Retain and bolster the Valley Center Fire Department, paid for with property tax revenue
- Become a member of Fire District 1 and let Sedgwick County provide the service for three years
- Retain and bolster the Valley Center Fire Department, paid for with a combination of property tax revenue and sales tax revenue
- This option could include a 1% sales tax increase question, which would be on the November ballot.
