A 12-year-old Southern California boy died after jumping into a lake at Central Park in California City while trying to escape attacking dogs, according to authorities and local reports, turning a summer evening at a public park into a tragedy now under active police investigation.
The boy, identified as Fernando Torres Moreno, was pulled from the water after officers responded to a drowning call on June 18. He was taken to a hospital, where lifesaving efforts continued, but he died the next day, June 19. A young girl who was also involved in the attack suffered dog bite injuries that officials described as serious but not life-threatening. She was treated at a hospital and later released.
Police have since been searching for 68-year-old Kenneth Dobbins, who authorities believe owned the dogs connected to the attack. Dobbins was reportedly at the park with the animals when the children were attacked. Early reports have differed on whether two or three dogs were involved, but police have said the animals were tied to Dobbins as the investigation developed.
