Worcester parents to demand money for books rather than iPads in schools

Worcester parents will tonight urge the Worcester School Committee to remove electronic, internet-connected devices from young children and put thousands of city budget dollars toward purchasing books rather than contracts for more iPads and Chromebooks.

Members of Worcester for Safe Student Technology will present a petition signed by nearly 500 parents caregivers, students, and educators across 51 schools in the district that requests the Worcester Public Schools design a policy that prioritizes “hands-on, teacher-led, screen-limited learning in early elementary education.”

The petition aims to remove internet-connected devices from students between preschool and second grade with exceptions for students requiring a device for medical purposes or who have learning disabilities and Individualized Education Programs…
