Scammers using Habitat for Humanity name, Wichita chapter says

The organization warns the community — especially seniors, who are often targeted by scammers — to be alert for anyone who may contact them claiming to be with Habitat.

The scams can involve fake housing applications or promises of roof replacements, other repairs or even free homes. Habitat urges the following precautions:

  • Only apply through Habitat websites or local Habitat offices.
  • Verify phone numbers and email addresses before sharing information.
  • Never send money, gift cards or banking information upfront (no organization will ask you to pay by gift card).
  • Don’t share sensitive information through social media or suspicious forms.
  • When in doubt, contact your local Habitat affiliate directly.
