Coffee Science
Tom Oliver spent thirty years in the New Orleans coffee industry before opening Coffee Science in a century-old craftsman cottage on South Broad Avenue that was nearly demolished before he bought it. The renovation preserved the bones of the building while opening a back deck and yard that functions as a proper outdoor sitting space, shaded and quiet enough to hear the neighborhood rather than the street. The coffee program runs on small-batch roasted beans, with the espresso nebula, a whipped espresso drink with cane sugar and ice, drawing the most consistent attention.
The pastry program runs alongside the coffee with seasonal breakfast items, savory burritos, and banana nut muffins that regulars treat as a specific reason to arrive early. The chocolate espresso king cake appears during Carnival season and has been featured in the Big Book of King Cake. Oliver also sells whole beans and cold brew at the Sunday City Park farmers market for anyone who wants to extend the ritual beyond the shop.
